The situation is very much like the ceiling of a roo

m in which airborne particulate matter is present. The lower the ceilin

g is, the higher the density of pollutants which then mix with the cleaner air.

With a low mixing layer, Taihang mountain range to the west and the Yanshan mountai

n range to the north serve as walls that form a semi-closed “room” in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei cluster.

The high level of emissions is the major reason for air pollution in th

e greater Beijing area, and meteorological conditions also play a key role as an exte

rnal factor, said Xu Xiangde, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences.

Zhang Xiaoye, Xu’s colleague, said the “marked effect” of continuous pollutant accu

mulation on meteorological conditions could make overall pollution even worse.

“After the accumulation reaches a certain level, it will further wor

sen the meteorological conditions, which then will further affect air quality, causing explosive

The monkeys implanted with human genes developed bett

better short-term memory and faster reaction times compared with the control group, acco

rding findings published March 27 in the China-based journal National Science Review.

The study also found that transgenic monkeys’ brains took longer to develop, in a similar fashion to humans.

The experiment has divided the scientific community however, with a number of Western scientists criticizing it as uneth

ical, while some went as far to suggest, perhaps ironically, that it could lead to a Planet of the Apes-type scenario.

The Kunming Institute of Zoology told China Daily in a statement that the experiment was ethically approved in 2010.

In 2015 the animal rights committee of Kunming Biomed International, a research organiza

tion specializing in nonhuman primates, also declared the animals were being treated humanely in every

step of the experiment, in accordance with domestic and international regulations, the statement said.

IMF upbeat on China’s 2019 growth in Zhuhai, Guangdong

The International Monetary Fund said on Tuesday that it expects China’s economy to grow 6.3 percent in 2019-up 0.1 perce

ntage point from its prediction in January. Analysts said the world’s second-large

st economy is set to remain stable as authorities continue to implement supportive policies.

The latest World Economic Outlook, released at the start of the sp

ring meetings of the IMF and the World Bank in Washington, also predicted the United States e

conomy would grow 2.3 percent this year, 0.2 percentage point lower than the IMF’s earlier forecast.

The outlook for China falls within the range of the country’s targeted goal of securing between 6 p

ercent and 6.5 percent growth for this year, and is very close to that of Chinese researchers.

On April 1, Zhang Ping, a researcher at the Institute of Economics of the Chinese Acad

emy of Social Sciences, said China’s GDP growth should remain at 6.2 percent in the fir

st half, and average 6.3 percent for the whole year, thanks to incentives including tax and fee cuts.

“With this weakness expected to persist into the first half of 2019, o

With improved prospects for the second half of 2019, global growth in 2

“This recovery is precarious and predicated to reboun

Crude steel production capacity in Hebei, Tianjin to be

Crude steel production capacity in Hebei province and Tianjin will be capped at 200 million metric tons

and 15 million tons by 2020, as part of China’s efforts to optimize the iron and steel industry, a senior government official said.

“There is too much capacity in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and

the surrounding areas, as well as the Yangtze River Delta region,” said Lyu Guixin, an ins

pector with the raw material department of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

“The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region takes up only 2.2 percent of

China’s territory, but accounts for 25 percent of the nation’s crude steel output.”

Although official figures from the Chinese authorities are not av

The mutually beneficial and win-win nature of China

France cooperation has not changed, Xi said.

“The history of China-France cooperation shows that bilateral ties are not ‘a zero-sum game.’ The strong com

plementarities between the two economies will remain for a long time,” Xi said, adding that China’s sustained devel

opment and further opening-up will create a host of new opportunities as well as broader space for bilateral cooperation.

Xi called on the two countries to constantly explore new fields of cooperation, nurture new growth areas for cooper

ation, and speed up the implementation of the Belt and Road and third-party cooperation projects that have been agreed upon.

“China staands ready to strengthen strategic communication and coordination with France on major issues including the UN aff

airs, the reform of the World Trade Organization and climate change,” Xi said, adding that China always supports European inte

gration and hopes France can play a more active role in leading and promoting China-Europe relations.

Hailing his successful visit to China last year, Macron said that the two countries have been implementing the important con
