Yukai Yang, a 22-year-old Chinese student who studied at
Lehigh University in Pennsylvania, was accused of racially discriminatory graffiti on an African roommate and is now accused of poisoning the roommate. Yang Yukai surrendered himself accompanied by a lawyer and was transferred to Northampton County Prison after being arraigned on charges of attempted homicide and assault on the 20th.
According to US media reports, John Morganelli, District Attorney for Northampton County, said Yang Yukai and Juwan Royal had been living in the same dormitory for many years.
When the case happened last spring, both of them were studying at Lihai University. Yang Yukai studied chemistry.
In April this year, Yang Yukai was accused of insulting Loyo with graffiti with racist meanings. Police found graffiti on Loyo’s beds, tables and TV sets.
Now prosecutors have charged him with murdering Loyo with thallium, a chronic poison. In March, Loyo was sick many times. Two months ago, when Loyou drank water in his room, he felt a burning sensation in his mouth. Later, he developed dizziness,
vomiting, tremor and other symptoms. Thallium was detected in his blood. Although he has graduated now, his poisoning symptoms have not been alleviated.
Thallium is more toxic to human body than lead and mercury, and its compounds are mutagenic, carcinogenic and teratogenic, leading to esophageal cancer, liver cancer,
colorectal cancer and other diseases, which pose a great threat to human health. At present, there is no ideal treatment for thallium poisoning.
Yang Yukai is no longer a student of the University and his student visa has been revoked.
